| | | | | | | Bad Boss Types & How to Handle Them |
| If you've never had a bad boss, consider yourself blessed and highly favored.
The rest of us? We've racked up horror stories (and therapy bills) from dealing with more than a few.
Here's your guide to spotting common bad boss archetypes (plus how to deal, and maybe even come out ahead):
π€³ The Narcissist
Takes all the credit. Shoots down your ideas. Makes everything about them.
How to deal: Keep receipts—document your wins & share them with other key people. Build a network outside your boss (peers, mentors, other leaders). If it gets toxic, loop in HR.
Try saying: "I'm proud of what I contributed here. Can we also highlight the team's efforts when we share this out?"

π The Passive Aggressive Boss
Backhanded compliments. Cryptic emails. "K." replies that leave you spiraling.
How to deal: Stay direct & polite. Ask for specifics when feedback feels fuzzy. Model the clarity you wish they had. If it keeps up, document it and consider talking to HR.
Try saying: "Could you clarify what you meant by that? I want to make sure I'm aligned."

π«₯ The Absentee
Barely there. Offers zero guidance. You're left guessing priorities.
How to deal: Set your own goals & keep them informed. Find mentorship elsewhere in the org. Or start exploring teams that'll actually support your growth.
Try saying: "Can we meet to discuss my goals for this quarter? I want to be sure I'm focusing on the right priorities."

π΅️♀️ The Micromanager
Hovers. Nitpicks. Won't trust you to send a simple email without three approvals.
How to deal: Get crystal clear on expectations & deadlines. Offer regular updates before they ask. Build trust by delivering on time (and flagging issues early).
Try saying: "I appreciate your input. I'd love to take more ownership here. Could we set up a quick weekly update so you feel looped in while I run with it day-to-day?"

Protect your peace. Stay professional, document everything, and if things don't change? It might be time to escalate, or move on to a place that actually deserves you.

| If you're running a business, there's always more to do—more leads to track, more content to post, more invoices to chase. But staying on top of it all doesn't mean working 24/7. It means working smarter and having the right tools in your corner.
Here are 5 essentials for growing your business (without burning out), plus the tools that'll help you do each one better:
π 1. Centralize your workflow to keep projects on track

| | | | Turns Out, Emotional Regulation Is a Leadership Skill |
| Just found a new therapist. (Sixth time's the charm…thanks, American insurance system π.)
But for once, I'm actually excited. Before I started going? It used to scare the sh*t out of me.
Growing up in a typical Asian household, feelings weren't just ignored—they were basically outlawed.
Upset? "Eat some fruit."
Stressed? "Why are you so dramatic?"
Any real emotion? Shoved so far under the rug, we're still tripping over it.
My first therapist cracked that open. She gave me tools that sounded embarrassingly simple: π An emotion wheel. Because "fine" isn't an emotion. ✍️ Journaling. Dumping everything on paper, then revisiting to see what was actually going on. π¬ Having painfully honest conversations with my husband, family, and friends, instead of bottling it up.
It felt weird and clunky. But it changed everything.
Even science backs it up: labeling your feelings literally calms your brain's threat system. Labeling emotions = more regulation, less reactivity.
And here's where it hit hardest:
Learning to actually feel my feelings didn't just make me healthier. It made me a better leader. I give cleaner, kinder feedback (because I know if I'm frustrated, disappointed, or just tired). I don't dump my stress on my team. I'll say, "Honestly, I'm overwhelmed right now," so they know it's safe to be human. I handle conflict with less defensiveness. I catch burnout sooner, and lead with more empathy because I get how messy emotions can be.
So if any of you can relate to this, here are a few things that've helped me:
Do a 2-word check-in. "What two words describe how I feel right now?" No journal required.
Ask 'what else?' Push past the obvious. Most feelings are layered.
Say it out loud. Literally. "I feel embarrassed." Hearing it matters.
Pair 'I feel' with 'I need.' "I'm overwhelmed. I need a 5-minute reset."
Notice your body. Tight chest? Clenched jaw? Heat behind your ears? That's your clue.
Start with small honesty. "I had a rough morning—can we circle back later?"
Screenshot the emotion wheel.
Use it. It's more powerful than it looks.
So yeah, I'm back in therapy. But not starting from scratch. And it's making me a steadier, more grounded leader than I ever thought I could be. |
| | P.S. While I normally use ZocDoc to help me find doctors, etc., Headway came through big to find my current therapist! |
| | | | If You're Still Managing Performance in a Spreadsheet… It's Time |
| HR today is more than compliance and onboarding. You're expected to lead culture, improve retention, boost engagement, and prove ROI on all of it; ideally without losing your mind or building 12 dashboards in Excel.
Here's where Lattice comes in. It's the people platform designed to help HR teams drive real results; not just track them.
What you can do with Lattice:
π Run performance reviews that are fair, fast, and fully customizable π§ Align goals across the company so every team knows what matters most π¬ Make feedback easy—with built-in tools for praise, coaching, and growth π Unlock engagement insights that help you spot issues before they snowball π
Automate 1:1s and check-ins so managers stay consistent (and employees feel seen)
Plus, a few smart HR tips while we're here:
✔️ Stop treating engagement surveys as a one-time event. Regular, lightweight pulse surveys give you a clearer picture of how your team's actually doing. ✔️ Train managers like they're part of your retention strategy—because they are. Lattice makes it easy to guide them with templates, reminders, and real-time data. ✔️ Tie performance to development. Employees want to know how today's work connects to tomorrow's growth. Lattice helps you map it out.
HR deserves better than duct-taped workflows and silent burnout.
With Lattice, you can build systems that support your people and your strategy. |
